The Smart Grids Hype Cycle

Members of the Smart Grids Platform Baden-Württemberg e.V., a non-profit initiative that brings together players from the energy sector, industry, politics, and academia, met for an information event on September 30, 2014 to confer on key tasks and goals to refine and expand smart grids.

Hype or necessity? Or from “Innovation Trigger” to “Plateau of Productivity”, as Gartner describes the typical path of an innovation from inception to productivity in its Hype Cycles. The moderator for the event, Sven Wagner (Bosch Software Innovations), guided participants along this curve and through the discussion whether Smart Grids are a hype or necessity.

Software instead of copper coils

From now on, Berlin-Britz will be known for more than just its beautiful Britzer Garden – it’s going to be recognized as a leader in contemporary energy management. Since September 18, the neighborhood’s substation – belonging to the Vattenfall subsidiary Stromnetz Berlin GmbH – has been the first in Germany to employ a new, radio-based ripple control system. Bosch Software Innovations helped flip the switch by designing the system’s IT platform and control logic.

For drivers of Mercedes-Benz and smart e-vehicles, public charging is about to become a part of everyday life thanks to “Charge&Pay for Mercedes-Benz” – a free Bosch Software Innovations smartphone app that makes locating and using almost every web-enabled charging point easier and more convenient. All it takes is a one-time registration and a PayPal account. The app will be available free of charge for iOS and Android operating systems from December 2014.

What connects ripple control and smart metering?

Bosch Software Innovations was contracted to develop an innovative IT platform for supporting load management and generation management in Berlin by the distribution grid operator Stromnetz Berlin GmbH (Vattenfall Group). This is an important step on the way to a smart energy grid. The planned deployment of smart metering systems – comprising smart meters and smart meter gateways – extends the scope of smart metering applications such that, for instance during critical network conditions, they can be used for encrypted capacity reduction by switching disconnecting power supply systems or for demand side management of customers.
